3D Sketching - Thoughts

I feel the project went well and the final pieces are of a high standard.  The sketch I chose converted nicely into maya, and created interesting structures. The grey tones used looked better on screen than printed. The most successful one is the piece without any shading, and just lines and a blue square. The image is really clean and crisp, and relates to the original pen lines used.

As I have shown it also mixes very well with other projects and is a skill I could use to make quick wireframe structures. Using the wireframes really suited this project as it connects with the line style used to sketch. However I have missed out on using materials and textures. I think this is something I could investigate more for future projects.

There was some issues rendering the images big enough to be printed. To solve this I used a small border around one of the final images so the render could be smaller. This was to avoid the image being pixelated as one of the main qualities of my renders is the sharp lines.

3D sketching - Additional Edit

Here is an extra edit i made using a background image from and older project. Unfortunatly the image is too small to print a4.

3D Sketching - Wireframe types

I have been experimenting with different render types in an effort to recreate my sketching style, especially when sketching 3d shapes on paper. My plan is to combine and edit the different images in photoshop.

3D Sketching - Render Styles

I feel that the object is complete and finished much like a quick sketch now. However there is still many types of render that can be done to it. I have continued to experiment with depth of field and wireframes.

The depth of field creates nice effects in still images but i think it is distracting from the line and shapes of the model. I have decided to remove depth of field and focus on line and colour from now on.

3D Sketching - the Software

To draw in the software the original sketch was imported as a plane. Using a wacom tablet and the pen curve tool the image was traced. This created a 2D layer of curves which is then twisted and distorted along one dimension only. This keeps the original sketch shape intact when viewed from the front. Any rotations around the object reveal the 3D spiraling shapes.

I will try to continue emphasizing the sketching and 3D element in the work. A slightly off white background looks more like the original paper. Depth of field dramatical enhances the 3D aspect of the work. By editing the camera these attributes can be altered. Below are some experements with depth of field.

3D sketching - 2d to 3D

-Brief

In this project the aim is to convert one of our 2d sketches into a 3d sketch. This would be done using the software Autodesk Maya.

-My Thoughts

I think the style of sketch converted could drastically change the difficulty of the task. A sketch with precise lines would be easier to convert than a more tonal piece. For this reason I chose one of my pen drawings. I went for one of the "blind" drawing shown bellow.

-"Blind Creation"

Happy accidents are often accociated with fluid mediums like paint and ink. 3D software is the complete opposite, where everything has a quantity and quality that is controlled by the artist. Object are worked again and again to perfection and any mistakes are quickly edited.
I will try my best throughout this project to cherish accident and mistakes. Hopefully this will compliment the chosen sketch and create a 3d sketch of similar quality.
